Have you been blessed with curly locks, prone to the frizzies and dryness? Perhaps, like many women with naturally textured, very curly hair, you have decided to chemically relax your mane.

Unfortunately, there is no magical treatment that will leave your relaxed hair healthy, bouncy, shiny and smooth – even relaxed hair can be a lot of work as the chemical treatment weakens your hair and presents a whole new range of problems.

Dorothe Charles, an Ottawa-based professional hair stylist, specializing in ethnic hair care, gives advice on creating and maintaining healthy hair for women of color, or anyone with dry, textured hair.

Ethnic Hair is Delicate

“The main issues we deal with here are environmental. The air is more dehydrated, and we have drier, breaking hair, so my job is to help people resolve these problems.”

As a specialist in caring for black and textured hair, Dorothe considers herself an educator and guide toward growing and maintaining healthy, beautiful hair, “Women don’t have to stick with what their grandmother told them; now we’re working, we’re business owners – we don’t have the time! Our hair can look just as nice a people with straight hair.”

Hair Breakage & Dry Scalp

The two biggest problems and complaints she hears from clients are hair breakage and dry scalp. “Those are the two main problems that people with textured hair have,” she explained, “We live in an environment where it is really dry, so we need moisture, moisture, moisture.

“Our scalps are dehydrated due to circumstances: First of all, some people with textured hair have a lack of sebaceous glands. The myth about black-hair, white-hair is not really true. If you look at caucasian people with curly hair, they have many of the same problems that black people have with their hair. It’s all about the texture. Just like a black person can have naturally pretty wavy hair, a white person can have very tight curls.

“The main issues we deal with here are environmental. The air is more dehydrated, and we have drier, breaking hair, so my job is to help people resolve these problems.”

Can Products Rejuvenate Damaged Hair?

Dorothe explained that many people believe the myth perpetuated by some products’ marketers, claiming to rejuvenate damaged hair, “People have been educated to believe that even once [your] hair has been really trashed, a hair dresser can bring the hair back to a healthy state. We can only bring it back (maybe) ten percent. A lot of manufacturers lie on their bottles saying they can make it fifty percent healthier or stronger; that’s not true.”

Unfortunately, for people with severely damaged hair (which is commonly caused by over processing and too much chemical treatment), the damage is generally irreversible.

Care for Naturally Curly & Relaxed Hair

Dorothe urges people with naturally curly, relaxed hair to be kind to their locks by wrapping, and using professional products, “That would really help, just those two little things!”

“Why would you use [poor quality] products in your hair? Let’s put it this way: If your hair is naturally curly, and you relax it, every half-inch of your hair that grows out that you need to relax will cost you about eighty-five dollars. So, if you think about how much your hair is worth, you will choose to use good products on your hair. “I chose to work at AVEDA because the products here are actually more concentrated. This is what we’ve been looking for.”

Shampoo, Conditioner, Treatments & Styling Products for Ethnic Hair

People should steer clear of weighty products that have traditionally been used in caring for textured hair, including pomades and moisturizing shampoos, “You don’t need such heavy-duty products. You don’t want products that contain mineral oils or paraffin waxes.

“You should use products containing raw ingredients. In order to stabilize those products, AVEDA has come up with a concept where you can get all of these [beneficial] things in one bottle; so you don’t’ have to mix things together to achieve what you need, nourishment-wise.”

Dorothe also directs clients to perform oil treatments before shampooing using essential oils, instead of oiling their scalps everyday, as black women have traditionally been taught.

“Essential oils are the cold-pressed oils that you get from plants, not animals. Animal proteins and oils are actually bigger molecules which cannot penetrate through the hair. That’s why your hair ends up with that greasy, stringy look which isn’t performing. Most of the time, heavy products actually clog the scalp, thus not allowing your natural moisture to come through the skin.”

Don’t fret, according to the experts at Schwarzkopf Professional, these hair salon secrets will have your hair flying high (but not away) in no time flat.

How to Create Hair Volume

Volume is achieved in styling by temporarily forming damp hair with the use of round brushes, styling rollers and backcombing. Hair when wet is pliable and can be formed into new shapes. When the hair is dried, moisture is removed, allowing internal bonds – dissolved when hair is we – to re-form, resulting in a temporary set. This volume effect will be lost when the hair is washed and will also be affected by environmental factors, such as wind and sunlight. The use of styling products can support and prolong a style.

Top Tools for Increasing Hair Volume

Unheated styling tools (styling product, brushes, etc.) themselves are unable to change the way hair looks, with the exception of pins and clips that remain in the hair. They do, however, play an indispensable role in supporting hairstyling processes and manipulating hair in a multitude of different ways.

Heated tools, such as blow-dryers and straightening irons, and unheated tools can be combined with styling products to achieve further results, such as round styling brushes used with a blow-dryer, and rollers with a drying hood.

Volume-Enhancing Blow Dryer Tips

The nozzle on a blow-dryer is useful in creating volume as it directs the heat exactly where it is required, at the root. Blow-drying hair without the nozzle often means the hair dries too quickly and the root hasn’t had its fair share of the heat so that it can take on the shape one desires.

Heat is what molds the hair into new shapes. It is critical to use a blow-dryer if one wants volume. Blow-drying slowly, using a low-medium heat is best as it gives the hair more time to mold.

Finish by locking your handiwork in place with a shot of cool air before removing the brush.

It seems like everyone is telling us to exercise, have a balanced diet and relax! Maybe they’re on to something, according to professional hair stylist Dorothe Charles.

“People come to me saying, ‘I’m stressed, I work two jobs, have a marriage that’s breaking up, and I have children who are driving me crazy’ They never believe that this will have an impact on their hair. It does!”

Your physical and mental health have an impact on the quality of your hair. If for vanity’s sake alone, make an effort to detox and de-stress your life.

Exercising, eating a balanced diet and/or taking multi-vitamins are all essential to helping your body to grow healthier hair.

How to Prevent Hair Breakage

“If you’re stressed or malnourished, as it grows the hair produced is more delicate, brittle and dry. That’s from your insides; that’s from what you’re eating, you’re not getting enough nutrients, so your body is not producing healthy, fortified hair. If you eat better, you’ll produce better hair. If you aren’t stressed, your hair won’t break in patches.

How Fast Does Hair Grow?

“Human hair seems to grow at an average rate of about half a millimeter or so per day, or about half an inch every month.

“Your hair will grow at the same rate, which varies for everyone, since genetically everyone is different. Some people produce growth, but it ends up breaking, so it seems like their hair is not growing at all. In terms of [patch] breakage, most of the time I see it in the back of the scalp, the temples, the centre, or even at the hairline. That’s from producing poor (quality) growth due to stress and a lack of nourishment in your body.”

In terms of general styling care, people with relaxed hair should avoid tying their hair back in an oh-so-easy ponytail, as the tension and stress induces breakage. Wrapping shorter styles at night keeps hair smooth and straight, thus reducing the amount of heat styling necessary, while also lessening the likelihood of tangles and other wear and tear.

Exercise & Stimulation Help Make Hair Strong

As with the rest of our bodies, our scalps also need a good workout. This can be achieved along with regular forms of exercise which increase your overall blood circulation, thus delivering extra blood and nourishment to the scalp as well.

“Stimulation is the key to adding a bit more to your natural rate of growth. Stimulating your scalp by brushing very often, massaging and rotating your scalp in circular motions.” While Dorothe admits the increased growth rate will not be drastic, it adds up over time.

according to professional hair stylist Dorothe Charles.

Diet, Nutrition & Vitamins for Strong Hair

In addition to other recently discovered health benefits of omega-3 fatty acids and B-vitamins, Dorothe suggests that people should eat foods rich in these nutrients to grow fortified hair. Specifically, she advises people to a healthy dose of nuts, fish, and green vegetables.

“I find a lot of people don’t eat enough fish or nuts. They have misconceptions about nuts and avocadoes being too fatty – those are the good fats that we need!”

Also, she prescribes whole wheat and other foods rich in fiber because they help the body flush out toxins, which can manifest themselves in unhealthy hair.

Keeping Your Hair Trimmed Trims Stress

Ever feel as though your hair dresser just loves the sound of his or her scissors snipping away at your hair? They’re just trying to rid you of excess stress, really!

“The constant, ongoing battle I have with clients is about trimming. I am really doing it for the clients; there’s really no self-interest involved. I’m trying to do something positive for them.

“As far as trims are concerned, this is how it works: Once it gets to a certain age, our hair seems like it gets brittle and dry, and starts to split. If you have four year-old hair on your head that’s never been trimmed, at least six months of that has to go. The older the hair, the more tarnished it is.”

People should place emphasis on moisturizing and protecting their ends from damage. Dorothe advises putting moisture on the ends, and trimming away dead, straggly ends.

“That’s why your diet and health are so important, because if four years ago you had a traumatic experience, it’s all up in your hair!”
